An oak-stained vase at 21 by 18 cm carved with a woven pattern — cuts crossing at angles so the surface reads as basketwork rather than as grooves. The stain deepens where the cuts intersect, which is where the wood is most open, so the weave gains depth from the finish rather than from the carving alone.
